A piece has to be about something. Not a topic, an argument. The writing we publish takes a position and works to defend it, uses evidence rather than assertion, and tells a reader something they did not already know or could not have guessed.
Most student writing does not do this, and that is not a criticism of students. It is what the format asks of them elsewhere: summarise, describe, conclude safely. We are asking for something harder.
Partner institutions run their own selection first and send us what they judge to be their strongest work. We read everything they send. We publish a fraction of it.
Every piece we accept goes through a full edit. That means structural feedback on what the argument is and whether it holds, line edits on the sentences, and at least one round of revision with the writer. Nothing publishes as submitted.
Every piece we decline gets a written response explaining what did not work. We think a specific rejection is worth more to a young writer than a form letter, and we would rather do the work than pretend otherwise.
An edit from people who edit for a living. A permanent published piece under their own byline. Evidence that they can hold an argument in public, which is a different claim from a grade.
Writers under eighteen are published under their first name only, with their city rather than their institution. Consent from a guardian is required before anything appears.

Young Voice sits inside Indisight, which publishes analysis for founders, operators and investors. The editorial standard is the same one we apply to ourselves. We do not run a lower bar because the writers are young.
